Aion: Upheaval, also known as Aion: The Tower of Eternity, is an extraordinarily popular massively multiplayer online role playing game, or MMORPG, which was released by NCSOFT. It combines PvP and PvE, to form PvPvE, in the environment of a fantasy game.

As of the 20th of May 2009, the game had 3.5 million subscribers in Asia alone, and it has simply been recruiting more ever since. The first big expansion pack for the game was released to Europe and North America on the 7th of September 2102, as AION: Assault on Balaurea. On the 29th of February 2012, AION changed publishers in Europe, while the Truly Free North American launch on the 11th of April 2012 was managed with no restriction. The game’s second major expansion released in North America on the 26th of June 2013, as Aion: Dark Betrayal, and the most recent expansion took place on the 13th of June 2016, as Aion: Echoes of Eternity.

Sales and Revenue Figures for the game
According to NCSOFT, Aion enjoyed the biggest MMO release in recent years, with 400 000 pre-orders in the USA. The game generated 40.6 billion won, around US$32 million, in the fiscal quarter in South Korea, China, Taiwan and Japan. In China, more than one million players logged into the game within the first four days of its release!

When it was released in the West, Aion became the top-selling PC game in September 2009, and also remained at first place on both the Steam and Direct2Drive charts for a number of weeks. By the 9th of November 2009, almost one million copies had been sold in the West, with 500 000 units in the United States, and 470 000 in Europe. The success of the game resulted in NCSOFT’s quarterly revenues rising 112% for an eye-watering total of US$142 million.

Reception for Aion Overall
Aion has managed to gain positive responses from pro reviewers, with an average score of 76% being found on Metacritic lists. It has done well in terms of eSports betting too, and has been said to have delivered a refreshing look in terms of artistic perspective, as well as an excellent first impression, thanks to the polish and balance of the game. IGN has stated that the game tries to offer a little something for everyone and succeeds in doing so, albeit in varying degrees and at different stages of play.

Aion and the eSports Market
With the undeniable growth of the eSports market set to start mounting even higher, as we look forward to the further integration of Virtual Reality aspects into all types of online play, it is almost definite that this game will reach the heights it is aiming for in terms of more general eSports availability. With these kinds of role playing games finding their place in everyday society far more easily these days, the sky's the limit in terms of the potential for these games to hit the big time, and succeed massively in terms of a global level of integration and availability.
