The good news is that NC has already thought about this. The slightly less comforting news is that the answer is not an unconditional yes.
AION 2 will use two waves of servers around global launch. Early Access Servers open first on September 30 and initially accept only Founder's Pack owners. A second group, called Launch Servers, opens when the game becomes free-to-play on October 5. Once full launch begins, free players will also be allowed to create characters on the original Early Access Servers if those servers are still open and available for new characters.
So your friends can potentially join the server you started on five days earlier. They just should not assume they will always be able to.
How AION 2 Early Access Servers Work
NC explained the structure in its official Early Access plans, dividing launch into an initial wave of Early Access Servers followed by additional Launch Servers for the October 5 release.
From September 30, Founder's Pack owners choose among the Early Access Servers available in their region. Those characters are permanent, and everything earned during those five days carries directly into full launch. This is completely different from the recent Launch Scale Test, where all progression was wiped.
When October 5 arrives, NC opens a second wave of servers. These new Launch Servers allow players entering the free-to-play version to begin on worlds where everyone starts at roughly the same point instead of dropping into a server where Founders already have five days of progression.
But NC is not permanently closing the original Early Access Servers to newcomers.
According to the published server plan, players who did not purchase Advanced Access will also be able to choose an Early Access Server after October 5 provided that server remains open and available.
Can Your Free-to-Play Friends Join Your Early Access Server?
Yes, if character creation is still open on that server.
That condition is the part everyone planning a mixed Founder/free-to-play group needs to remember.
If you start September 30 and your friends wait until October 5, NC intends to let them create characters on your Early Access Server. But server population could potentially change that. If the server becomes crowded enough that NC restricts new character creation, your friends may no longer be able to join it immediately.
NC has already demonstrated that it is willing to react to server population during live testing. Four additional European worlds were opened during the Launch Scale Test after the first session began, while the company has also introduced a priority queue system for servers at capacity.
That does not mean the most popular Early Access Servers will definitely close character creation. NC has not announced population caps or a specific policy for doing so.
It simply means that waiting five days carries a small amount of server-selection risk if your group absolutely must play on the same specific world.
You Can Still Run Dungeons Together Across Servers
Fortunately, choosing different servers does not completely separate friends.
AION 2 uses region-wide dungeon party matching. During Advanced Access, players can match with people from all Early Access Servers within the same geographical region rather than being limited to the population of their individual world.
After the October 5 launch, that matchmaking pool expands to include both Early Access Servers and the newly opened Launch Servers within the region.
That means a player who started September 30 and a friend who created a character on a new October 5 server should still be able to meet through dungeon matchmaking once both servers are part of the full regional pool.
This is particularly useful considering how much of AION 2's progression is built around instanced PvE. The game advertises more than 200 dungeon activities across solo, 5-player and 10-player content, so cross-server grouping prevents individual worlds from becoming isolated dungeon communities.
The Abyss Works Differently During Advanced Access
PvP is a little more complicated.
During the five-day Advanced Access period, Abyss matchmaking is limited to Early Access Servers. Founder's Pack players therefore compete against other servers whose populations have had access for roughly the same amount of time.
That prevents an Advanced Access server with several days of gear progression from immediately being matched against a brand-new October 5 server.
After full launch, NC plans to match servers according to their progression and relative strength rather than permanently dividing them into “Early Access” and “Launch” categories.
That is an important distinction. Early Access Servers do not become some permanent premium league where Founders only fight Founders forever. The separation is primarily there to protect the opening progression curve.
Once server development begins evening out, Abyss matchmaking can expand appropriately.
AION 2 Has Both Server and Cross-Server Markets
The economy follows a similar phased approach.
AION 2 has a Server Market operating within each individual world. This is available from the beginning of Advanced Access and remains available after full launch.
The separate Cross-Server Market connects servers across a wider region, but NC does not intend to activate it immediately. Instead, the company says it will open after release once participating servers have reached sufficiently similar stages of progression.
That makes sense when one group has had five extra days to acquire materials and currency. Opening a fully shared regional economy immediately would allow the more mature Advanced Access worlds to influence brand-new Launch Server economies from the moment they opened.
The system is particularly relevant now that direct player-to-player trading has been disabled for AION 2 Global. NC has made the Market the main hub for player commerce, so deciding when different server economies merge matters considerably more.
Server Transfers Are Planned
There is also a safety net for players who end up somewhere they regret.
NC says it is committed to enabling a Server Transfer Service after launch. The company intends to monitor server occupancy following Advanced Access and the full release, partly to relieve congestion and help players reorganize as populations settle.
What we do not have yet are the important details.
NC has not announced:
- when server transfers become available
- whether transfers will be free or paid
- how often characters can move
- whether faction restrictions apply
- which servers can transfer between each other
- whether heavily populated servers can receive transfers
So a future transfer system should not be treated as permission to randomly choose a server on September 30 and sort everything out later.
It is better viewed as insurance for a launch environment where populations inevitably develop in ways nobody completely predicts.
What Should a Group of Friends Actually Do?
If everyone in your group owns a Founder's Pack, the answer is easy: agree on your region, server and faction before September 30 and start together.
If some players are Founders and others are waiting for the free launch, there are two reasonable approaches.
The safest is for the Founder players to wait until October 5 so everyone can choose a server together. Of course, paying for five days of early access and then deliberately not using them has a certain philosophical elegance but very little practical appeal.
The more realistic approach is for Founders to start September 30 on an Early Access Server and have their friends attempt to join that same server on October 5.
NC explicitly intends to allow this.
The only risk is that the chosen Early Access Server becomes unavailable for new character creation by then.
For larger guilds, that makes server selection especially important. Piling onto whichever world becomes unofficially labelled “the big server” during Advanced Access may be tempting, but it also increases the risk that late-arriving guild members have difficulty joining.
Your Platform Does Not Create Separate Servers
Steam and PURPLE users are not being divided into completely separate server ecosystems either. Both access the same global service, so your friend choosing a different launcher does not automatically prevent you from playing together.
The main platform restrictions concern purchases and Founder's Pack entitlements, which is why we recommend choosing carefully in our AION 2 Steam vs PURPLE guide.
Server region, server choice and faction matter much more when coordinating a group.
The Five-Day Head Start Does Not Permanently Split the Community
That is ultimately the most important takeaway.
AION 2's Advanced Access is designed to create a five-day head start, not a permanent wall between paying Founders and people joining for free.
Early Access Servers open September 30.
Launch Servers join them October 5.
Dungeon matchmaking expands across both server groups. Abyss matchmaking eventually becomes progression-based. Cross-server Markets open later when economies are closer together. Server transfers are planned as populations settle.
And free-to-play players can even join the original Early Access Servers after launch as long as those worlds remain open to new characters.
That last condition is the one worth remembering.
If your friends are arriving October 5, they should probably know your server name before they download the game.
They just should not wait until launch night to discover whether there is still room.
