There are many ways to make money in an MMORPG. You can craft equipment, gather materials, defeat monsters, sell valuable drops or spend several evenings negotiating with a marketplace that sometimes seems to operate according to the economic principles of a particularly confused goblin. And then there are the people who would rather have a computer do the entire thing for them.
NC has decided that the latter group deserves some attention. On October 11, the company announced restrictions against 4,996 AION 2 Global accounts following an investigation into activities violating the game's Operation Policy. The action took effect at 08:00 CEST, making it one of the most significant publicly announced enforcement actions since the Global launch on October 5.
Nearly 5,000 AION 2 Accounts Restricted
According to NC's official announcement, the restrictions target several categories of prohibited activity, including automated gameplay, commercial gold farming, unauthorized software and real-money trading. The company also identified abnormal trading patterns that could interfere with the in-game economy.
The enforcement categories include:
- Botting and gold farming: Automated programs, unauthorized macros and organized farming operations.
- Unauthorized software: Programs or tools that violate AION 2's Operation Policy.
- Real-money trading: Activities involving the sale of in-game currency or other value outside permitted systems.
- Economy abuse: Suspicious trading patterns that disrupt the normal marketplace.
NC says restrictions are applied following a review of account activity rather than simply punishing players for spending a long time online. The announcement does not provide a separate breakdown of how many accounts belonged to each violation category, so it would be misleading to describe all 4,996 as confirmed bots.
Regular Grinding Is Not Against the Rules
One particularly important clarification concerns ordinary players who spend large amounts of time farming monsters, gathering resources or working through repetitive activities. NC specifically states that legitimate gameplay, including extended grinding sessions, is not affected by the enforcement measures.
That distinction matters in AION 2, where gathering, crafting and equipment progression already encourage considerable repetition. A player spending an entire evening collecting materials is not automatically doing anything wrong. Using unauthorized tools to automate that activity, however, is another matter entirely.
NC also distinguishes disciplinary restrictions from temporary security locks. Some accounts may be locked because of suspicious connections, unfamiliar devices or indications of possible account compromise. These precautionary measures are intended to protect accounts and their items rather than punish their owners.
Why AION 2's Economy Is Such a Big Target
The battle against gold farming did not begin this weekend. Before Global launched, NC had already introduced restrictions intended to make automated farming operations less profitable. Most notably, the company disabled direct player-to-player trading as an anti-bot measure, forcing ordinary commerce through the game's Market.
The reasoning was straightforward. A centrally monitored marketplace makes suspicious transactions easier to investigate than private exchanges between characters. It does not eliminate gold sellers, of course. If twenty years of MMORPG history have taught us anything, it is that commercial farmers tend to regard every new restriction as an interesting technical challenge.
AION 2's Membership and Market systems also make the economy unusually important to the wider discussion surrounding the game. When equipment progression, currency exchanges and marketplace access are closely connected, large-scale illicit farming can potentially distort prices and undermine legitimate players' efforts.
NC had already confronted similar problems in the earlier Asian versions. In April, we covered a Taiwan enforcement notice involving 940 permanent bans, demonstrating that the fight against unauthorized programs is hardly a new development for the sequel. The Global service is now facing its own version of that familiar problem.
What If Your AION 2 Account Was Locked?
Players who cannot access their accounts should first determine whether they received an enforcement restriction or a temporary security lock. NC explains that the latter can occur when account access appears potentially compromised, and it should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of cheating.
If you believe your account was restricted incorrectly, NC recommends submitting a ticket through AION 2 Customer Support. The company says requests are reviewed individually. Players should provide accurate account information and details about the problem rather than assuming that every login restriction represents a permanent ban.
Will the Crackdown Actually Stop AION 2 Bots?
Removing nearly 5,000 accounts is a substantial enforcement action, particularly during the game's opening week. But whether it produces lasting improvements depends on what happens next. Automated farming operations can attempt to replace restricted accounts, and a free-to-play game presents fewer financial barriers to account creation than a traditional subscription-only MMORPG.
For ordinary players, the most meaningful results would be fewer automated characters competing for resources, less suspicious marketplace activity and a healthier economy over time. Those improvements cannot be established from one enforcement announcement alone.
NC has already made significant adjustments to the Global version, including changes intended to address concerns about monetization and economic balance. Stronger enforcement is another part of that process, but it will require continued monitoring rather than a single weekend of account restrictions.
For now, the message is clear: ordinary players can continue grinding, gathering and progressing normally. Those hoping to turn Atreia into an automated currency factory may find that the business model has suddenly become considerably less attractive.
And that is probably good news for everyone who would rather play AION 2 than compete against somebody else's spreadsheet with wings.
