AION 2 Launch Patch Makes Five-Player Bosses Harder

AION 2's Global launch patch did more than simply open the doors to hundreds of thousands of new players. NC also quietly decided that some dungeon bosses had been going a little too easy on us.

As part of the October 5 launch maintenance, NC confirmed that the stats of some AION 2 bosses have been increased because they were set too low for the intended difficulty of a five-player party. The patch also makes several substantial quality-of-life changes, including extending the inactivity timer from 30 minutes to three hours and reducing the character deletion period from an extraordinary seven days to just 24 hours.

So yes, your character can now stand around doing nothing for considerably longer while the bosses become better at killing it.

Some Five-Player Bosses Were Too Easy

The most interesting change for PvE players is the boss adjustment. NC says some bosses had stats that were simply too low for the intended difficulty of five-player content, and those values have now been adjusted.

Importantly, the patch notes do not identify which bosses were changed or provide exact HP, damage or defensive values. That means we should not assume every Expedition boss suddenly received a blanket buff. What we know is that NC found specific encounters that were underperforming compared with the difficulty expected from a full five-player party.

That matters because five-player content sits at the heart of AION 2's group progression. As we explained in our guide to AION 2's dungeons and PvE structure, normal party content is specifically built around groups of five, while harder progression later expands into larger organized encounters.

If an early Expedition suddenly feels nastier than it did during Advanced Access, there may therefore be a perfectly good reason.

The AFK Timer Is Now Three Hours

The other immediately noticeable change is much friendlier.

AION 2 previously returned inactive players to the server selection screen after 30 minutes without input. That timer has now been extended to three hours.

During a launch where server populations have been enormous, this is a surprisingly generous change. It means taking a dinner break, dealing with real life or accidentally becoming distracted by something outside Atreia no longer guarantees that you return to the server selection screen.

It also arrives just as NC has dramatically expanded the Global server lineup. The company opened another 44 servers for free-to-play launch, which we covered in our complete AION 2 October 5 launch server list.

Character Deletion No Longer Takes a Week

One of the stranger Advanced Access restrictions has also been relaxed.

Deleting a character previously required waiting 168 hours. That is seven full days, which is a remarkably long time to contemplate whether creating an Asmodian called xXDarkAngelLordXx was really the mistake everyone said it was.

The waiting period is now just 24 hours. NC has also lowered the minimum level required to delete a character from level 10 to level 1.

For new players experimenting with classes, names and servers during launch week, that is a far more practical system.

Quest Objects Should Be Less Annoying

NC has also addressed some of the friction caused by large numbers of players attempting the same quests simultaneously. Certain quest objects will no longer disappear after use, while others now have shorter respawn times.

That may sound like a small change until twenty people are standing around waiting for the same object to reappear.

The launch patch also increases the amount of time that in-game announcements remain visible from three seconds to ten seconds, fixes occasional position rollbacks while using Auto Move near other players and addresses several quest progression problems.

The Level 45 Duty Problem Still Needs Attention

There is one launch issue players should still be particularly careful about.

NC's current workaround for the Journal Duty problem means players should avoid opening the Duty tab before reaching level 45. Doing so can delay access to the feature until the following day. We have a separate AION 2 Duty Tab warning and workaround explaining exactly what to avoid.

For now, the safest approach is wonderfully simple: leave that button alone.

AION 2 Is Already Being Tuned Around Real Players

The most interesting thing about the launch patch is not any individual setting. It is how quickly NC is already adjusting the Global version around actual player behaviour.

Quest objects are being changed because enormous crowds need them. Character deletion is becoming less punitive. The inactivity timer is six times longer. And bosses that were not putting enough pressure on five-player groups are being strengthened.

That last change is probably the one PvE players will notice most over the coming days.

AION 2 has only just properly launched, but apparently some of its bosses have already received the first memo:

Stop being nice.
