There is something wonderfully embarrassing about designing a terrifying endgame dragon, surrounding it with elaborate mechanics, and watching a determined group of players defeat it before they have even finished collecting the equipment you expected them to need. That, more or less, is what happened to Ludra during AION 2's Early Access period. Rather than simply congratulating the victors and moving on, NC has decided to send the dragon back to the workshop.
During the October 9 post-launch livestream, the developers revealed additional details about Sanctuary Raid: Ludra, confirming plans for both Normal and Hard difficulty modes when the encounter returns to the Global version. There will also be a new First Clear competition, giving organised raid groups another opportunity to claim recognition for defeating the redesigned encounter before anyone else in their region.
Why Was Ludra Removed From AION 2 Global?
Ludra was originally available during Advanced Access, which began September 30. However, players cleared the encounter considerably earlier in their progression than NC anticipated. Instead of presenting the intended endgame challenge, the raid had already surrendered to players who were supposedly still preparing for it.
NC acknowledged the situation in an official October 5 announcement, explaining that Ludra would be temporarily removed with the full Global launch while the encounter received substantial adjustments. The developer specifically promised new mechanics and revised attack patterns, meaning returning players should not expect to repeat their previous strategies without encountering a few unpleasant surprises.
This fits the broader direction of AION 2's Global PvE balancing. NC has already strengthened several five-player bosses after discovering that their difficulty was lower than intended, something we covered in our report on the Global dungeon boss changes. Ludra, however, represents a much more ambitious intervention.
Ludra Will Have Normal and Hard Difficulty Modes
The most interesting detail from the October 9 livestream is the introduction of two difficulty levels. When Sanctuary Raid: Ludra returns, players will be able to challenge the encounter on Normal or Hard difficulty, creating a clearer distinction between groups interested in completing the raid and those seeking a considerably more demanding challenge.
That makes sense for a game attempting to serve both ordinary dungeon groups and highly organised endgame players. AION 2 already offers a substantial PvE structure, from solo challenges to five-player Expeditions and ten-player Sanctuary encounters, as explained in our complete AION 2 dungeon and PvE overview.
What NC has not yet revealed is equally important. We still do not have complete details about the mechanical differences between Normal and Hard, their final entry requirements, or how rewards will vary between difficulties. The developers have confirmed the direction, but the finer details remain under wraps.
A New Regional First Clear Race Is Coming
NC also intends to turn Ludra's return into a competitive event. The redesigned raid will launch alongside a new First Clear competition, with the first successful group in each participating region receiving special recognition.
According to the October 9 livestream, the competition will recognise regional first clears with a unique title and placement in the game's Hall of Fame. NC's earlier written announcement independently confirms that the Hall of Fame will be reset for the returning encounter and that a special First Clear reward is planned.
This creates an interesting situation for experienced raid groups. Players who cleared Ludra during Advanced Access already understand the original encounter, but revised mechanics should prevent the competition from becoming a simple repetition of an existing strategy. Whether the changes are enough to keep the strongest groups occupied for several days or merely several hours remains to be seen.
There is also the inevitable question of character power. AION 2's progression and monetisation systems have already generated considerable discussion, including concerns examined in our Global review of the game's PvE and progression systems. A regional raid race will provide an interesting test of how much preparation, equipment, coordination and mechanical skill matter at the highest level.
What Happens to Early Access Ludra Gear?
Players who defeated Ludra before the Global launch have not been forgotten. NC temporarily removed Ludra-specific equipment earned during Advanced Access while preparing the revised encounter, but confirmed that those items will be returned once the raid becomes available again.
Materials previously invested in upgrading the affected equipment will also be reimbursed. That is particularly important in AION 2, where character progression involves substantial investment in enhancement materials and equipment improvements.
NC has also promised a unique commemorative title to players who cleared Ludra in the European region during Early Access. That recognition is separate from the upcoming First Clear competition and acknowledges the players who defeated the original version before its temporary removal.
When Will Ludra Return to AION 2 Global?
As of October 12, there is still no confirmed reopening date for Sanctuary Raid: Ludra.
NC has promised to announce the new release date by October 16, together with further information about the redesigned encounter and First Clear event. Importantly, October 16 is the deadline for the announcement, not a confirmed date for the raid to become playable.
Players preparing for the return should therefore concentrate on improving their equipment, developing reliable ten-player groups and becoming comfortable with the game's combat mechanics rather than assuming they need to be raid-ready this Friday.
AION 2 Needs a Raid Worth Remembering
For all the attention surrounding AION 2's launch population, server expansions and marketplace restrictions, the game's long-term appeal will depend heavily on whether its endgame encounters remain interesting after the initial rush. Challenging raids give dedicated players something to organise around, strategies to develop and accomplishments that cannot simply be purchased from a vendor.
Ludra's unexpected Early Access defeat may have disrupted NC's original plans, but it has also created an opportunity. Two difficulty modes, redesigned mechanics and a fresh regional race could make the returning Sanctuary raid considerably more interesting than the version players already conquered.
Of course, the developers now face one small problem: they have publicly promised a tougher dragon to a community that has already demonstrated considerable enthusiasm for killing dragons ahead of schedule.
Hopefully Ludra has been using the downtime productively.
