AION 2 Abyss Matchmaking Now Pairs Elyos With Elyos

For most of AION's history, one thing was reassuringly predictable: Elyos fought Asmodians, Asmodians fought Elyos, and the Abyss offered both sides plenty of opportunities to settle old grievances with enormous weapons. AION 2 Global has just complicated that arrangement.

Under NC's October 28, 2026 server matchmaking update, two Elyos servers can now be paired against one another in the Abyss. The same applies to two Asmodian servers. It is a notable departure from the Global launch structure, which paired each faction's server with one from the opposing side.

More than an isolated exception, same-faction opponents account for 25 of the 53 Abyss server pairs in the published update. Spacetime Rifts, meanwhile, retain separate Elyos-versus-Asmodian pairings. The result is a PvP system in which your Abyss rival and your Rift rival may be entirely different servers.

What Has Changed in Abyss Matchmaking?

AION 2 Global places Elyos and Asmodians on separate home servers. Before the October 28 reshuffle, the opening matchups paired servers across the faction divide. As our Advanced Access matchmaking report explained, picking a home server also helped determine which opposing population you would encounter in cross-server PvP.

NC has now introduced a more flexible arrangement for the Abyss. Its official notice explicitly allows servers belonging to the same faction to be matched. In Europe, for example, Triniel and Lumiel are both Asmodian servers, yet they are listed as an Abyss pair. Yustiel and Fregion are both Elyos and are also paired.

That does not mean NC has announced unrestricted friendly fire, free-for-all PvP between members of one home server, or a change to a character's faction. What is confirmed is a new cross-server pairing arrangement for Abyss competition. The precise in-combat treatment of same-faction opponents should be judged from the Global client rather than inferred from the table alone.

The distinction matters because the two activities have different roles. The Abyss is AION 2's large-scale contested PvP environment, while Spacetime Rifts create temporary opportunities for invasions. Our overview of the Abyss, Rifts and Arenas explains how those modes fit into the Global game's competitive structure.

All 25 Same-Faction Abyss Pairs, by Region

NC published 53 Abyss pairings across Europe, North America East, North America West, South America and Asia. Our count of the official list identifies 25 same-faction pairs: 13 in Europe, four in NA East, two in NA West, four in South America and two in Asia.

The other 28 Abyss pairs in the October 28 notice remain cross-faction. The table above is deliberately limited to the unusual same-faction pairings; the complete official matchmaking notice contains every Abyss pairing and the separate Rift lists.

Always check the region as well as the server name. Siel, Triniel and several other names appear in multiple regions, but their matchups are not necessarily the same. Nor should this table be treated as permanent: NC says the pairings will be changed periodically in pursuit of more balanced battles.

Spacetime Rifts Still Match Elyos Against Asmodians

The clearest example of the distinction comes from Europe's Triniel server. In the Abyss, Triniel's listed opponent is Lumiel, another Asmodian server. In Spacetime Rifts, Triniel is instead paired with Siel, an Elyos server. The faction rivalry therefore remains part of Rift matchmaking even when the same home server faces a same-faction Abyss opponent.

NC's published Rift tables retain Elyos-versus-Asmodians combinations across all five Global regions. Consequently, players should not carry an Abyss opponent's name over to their Rift plans without checking the separate list. For Legions arranging PvP activity, confusing the two would be an unusually elaborate way to turn up to the wrong fight.

The Abyss itself has been changing in other ways. NC's October 21 update increased its player capacity and raised Abyss boss HP, changes covered in our report on larger Abyss encounters. Those adjustments concern the scale and durability of encounters; the October 28 matchmaking notice concerns which servers meet there. They should not be conflated.

Why NC Is Changing Opponents, and What Players Should Do

NC's stated reason for revisiting server pairings is competitive balance. Letting Abyss matchmaking consider same-faction servers increases the number of possible opponents rather than forcing every pair to cross the faction divide. That may make it easier to respond when servers differ in population or organisation, but NC has not published the formula used to select each matchup, nor data proving the new combinations are fairer.

For organised PvP groups, the immediate consequence is practical: identify the correct opponent for your region and activity before planning the next Abyss session. Don't assume a familiar rival is still assigned to your server, and don't assume the Rift opponent has changed in the same way. Legions preparing specialised characters can also revisit the PvP-focused progression covered in our Daevanion Board Guide.

Finally, matchmaking is not the same as a server transfer. The initial free transfer windows described in our Server Transfer Guide ended with the October 28 maintenance. A new opponent in the Abyss does not mean players have been moved to another home server or allowed to change factions.

For nearly two decades, AION's faction divide has supplied a simple answer to the question of who the enemy is. The October 28 Abyss table makes that answer less automatic. It does not abolish Elyos and Asmodians, and it does not change every PvP mode. It does mean that a rival server can now carry the same faction banner as your own.

Atreia has always been good at creating enemies. Apparently, it no longer needs two different factions to arrange an Abyss rivalry.

Official source: NC – Server Matchmaking, October 28, 2026. The 25-of-53 count is calculated from NC's announced Abyss pairings. This is a dated Global matchmaking snapshot; later announcements and the live client take precedence if pairs change.
