There was a time when learning a new skill in an MMORPG involved finding a trainer, handing over some money and hoping the ability was actually worth placing on your action bar. AION 2 has a rather more elaborate arrangement. It gives you thirteen Stigma skills to choose from, allows you to equip only four, and then asks you to spend a surprisingly precious resource improving them.
Naturally, the temptation is to upgrade everything that looks impressive. A glowing sword, a giant magical explosion or a particularly intimidating defensive ability must surely be worth investing in. Unfortunately, AION 2 has other ideas about how generously it distributes Stigma Shards.
In AION 2 Global, Stigmas unlock at level 22, with additional slots opening at levels 27, 32 and 37. Each class has thirteen Stigma skills, but only four can be equipped simultaneously. Reaching level 20 with a single Stigma requires 75 Stigma Shard-points, making careful investment considerably more important than collecting every available ability.
If you are still deciding which character deserves your attention, our complete guide to AION 2's eight classes explains their different combat roles. Stigmas are where those roles begin developing into more specialised builds.
How to Unlock Stigmas and All Four Slots
The Stigma system becomes available at character level 22, but reaching the required level is only part of the process. You must also complete the third Ascension quest, The One Who Hears the Voice, which unlocks the system and provides your first Stigma Shard.
Once the quest is complete, open the Skills menu and select the Stigma tab. Choose an ability, learn its first level and register it in an available Stigma slot. The system initially provides only one equipped slot, with three more becoming available as your character progresses.
| Character Level | Available Stigma Slots |
|---|---|
| 22 | 1 slot |
| 27 | 2 slots |
| 32 | 3 slots |
| 37 | 4 slots |
Four is the maximum number of equipped Stigmas in the current Global Season 1 configuration. You may encounter Korean and Taiwanese builds using five or six abilities, but those reflect different progression systems and should not be copied directly.
There is also a difference between learning a Stigma and equipping it. An unlocked ability does not automatically become available in combat. It must occupy one of your four slots, and changing your equipped selection is restricted during combat.
How Many Stigma Shards Do You Need?
Stigma upgrades use their own points rather than ordinary skill points. Every five levels, the cost increases substantially, which means taking a Stigma from level 15 to 20 is rather more expensive than its first fifteen levels combined.
| Stigma Levels | Cost Per Level | Total Shards Spent |
|---|---|---|
| 1–5 | 1 | 5 |
| 6–10 | 2 | 15 |
| 11–15 | 4 | 35 |
| 16–20 | 8 | 75 |
Fully upgrading four Stigmas to level 20 costs 300 points. Character progression alone provides nowhere near that amount. By level 45, the Global progression table awards 29 points through levelling, in addition to the initial Ascension reward. The remaining investment must come from additional activities and rewards.
The important levels are 5, 10, 15 and 20. Each unlocks another Stigma specialisation effect, and these effects can change how useful an ability becomes. One upgrade might strengthen damage, while another improves crowd control, reduces a cooldown or changes how a skill functions.
This creates a much more interesting choice than simply increasing every ability by one level. A level 5 Stigma may already provide useful utility, while another ability might need level 10 or 15 before becoming central to your rotation.
For a new character, I would generally start by unlocking the four abilities needed for your preferred build, bringing the most useful ones to their early specialisation breakpoints, and only then concentrating expensive upgrades on the Stigma that contributes most to your playstyle.
It is the same principle behind our guide to costly AION 2 progression mistakes. A resource is only valuable when it improves something you actually use. Spending forty points on the final five levels of an ability that rarely leaves your skill bar untouched is one of the less glamorous ways to become poorer.
Where to Get More Stigma Shards
Fortunately, levelling is not your only source. Global client reward data identifies several opportunities to obtain additional Stigma Shards, including Abyss-related shops, Nightmare activities, Shugo Festival rewards, regional quests and progression rewards.
Players should check the following sources while building their characters:
- Character progression: Earn Stigma points through levelling after unlocking the system.
- Abyss Shop: Obtain additional shards through Abyss-related currency and rewards.
- Nightmare and Shugo Festival shops: Check their available shard rewards and current purchase requirements.
- Regional quests and achievements: Some progression rewards provide additional shards.
- Dungeon rewards: Certain rewards contain Unstable Stigma Shards, which can be converted through Substance Morph.
The sources are particularly important because they connect Stigma progression to activities players should already be considering. Our AION 2 weekly reset checklist is a useful starting point for organising limited shops, currencies and dungeon activities without discovering on reset day that you forgot something valuable.
Players spending time in the Abyss can also combine their Stigma progression with ordinary PvP activities. Our guide to Abyss, Rifts and Arena combat explains the different PvP systems and how they fit into AION 2's broader progression.
One detail deserves special attention: Superior Stigma Shards are not the same as regular Stigma Shards. They are associated with progression beyond level 20 in later systems. The current Global level-45 environment should not be confused with Korean guides discussing higher-level Stigma upgrades.
Which Stigmas Should Each Class Prioritise?
There is no single perfect Stigma setup for every encounter. A tank preparing for a difficult dungeon boss has different priorities from one trying to survive an Assassin in the Abyss, while a Cleric's most valuable contribution may be keeping four other players alive rather than improving personal damage.
Still, the current Global client data and observed high-level player builds provide useful starting points.
| Class | Strong Starting Stigma | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Gladiator | Zikel's Blessing | Offensive burst and accuracy |
| Templar | Taunt | Tank control and enemy weakening |
| Assassin | Illusive Clone | Core offensive build synergy |
| Ranger | Vaizel's Authority | Ranged damage and offensive support |
| Sorcerer | Element Enhancement | Elemental damage optimisation |
| Spiritmaster | Summon: Ancient Spirit | Summon-focused combat |
| Cleric | Light of Protection | Defensive and healing utility |
| Chanter | Undefeated Mantra | Party support and performance |
These are sensible starting investments, not commandments carved into an ancient Balaur monument. Your actual selection should reflect the content you play and the abilities your other skills support.
For example, Ranger can combine offensive Stigmas with abilities such as Supporting Fire and Arrow Storm. Supporting Fire contributes damage while the Ranger continues attacking, whereas Arrow Storm provides useful crowd control and Stagger damage. Our Ranger PvE build guide demonstrates how those abilities fit into a complete rotation rather than functioning as isolated buttons.
Chanter offers a different example. Undefeated Mantra improves party performance, while other Stigmas can strengthen movement, offensive pressure or emergency support. Our Chanter PvE guide explains why the class works best when damage and group utility complement one another.
Sorcerer and Spiritmaster players should also consider how their selected abilities interact with the current Global build. NC recently corrected several spell and summon problems, which we covered in our Sorcerer and Spiritmaster patch breakdown. A corrected ability may now behave more consistently, but that does not automatically make it the best investment for every situation.
Should You Max One Stigma or Upgrade Several?
This is where AION 2's progression becomes a little more interesting. The first five levels of a Stigma cost just five points. Reaching level 10 requires fifteen points in total, while pushing from level 15 to 20 alone costs forty.
That makes early specialisation breakpoints attractive, particularly when an ability provides important crowd control, a defensive effect or a party buff. Rather than spending your entire early budget on one spectacular attack, consider whether bringing several frequently used Stigmas to level 5 or 10 would improve your overall combat performance.
On the other hand, some abilities become dramatically stronger at later breakpoints. If a level 15 or 20 specialisation fundamentally improves your main damage rotation, concentrating your shards may be justified. The key is identifying the effect before committing the resources.
Stigma resets can return invested points, but resetting has its own requirements and cost. That makes experimentation possible without turning every upgrade decision into a permanent disaster. Nevertheless, checking the specialisation descriptions before spending remains considerably easier than reorganising an entire build afterwards.
For PvE, focus on abilities that support the damage rotation, improve party contribution or solve genuine survival problems. For PvP, mobility, crowd control, defensive cooldowns and interruption tools become more valuable. The correct answer is often to maintain different equipped selections for different activities rather than pretending one build should excel at everything.
And remember that Stigmas are only part of the character. They work alongside regular skills, combat stats, equipment and Daevanion progression. Our AION 2 combat stats guide is useful when deciding whether a particular offensive ability benefits more from Accuracy, Critical Damage or another stat.
AION 2 has given every class plenty of tempting magical abilities, but the real trick is learning which four deserve a permanent place on your bar, and which deserve your limited shards.
Because nothing quite captures the MMORPG experience like spending an evening studying a collection of magical skills, carefully planning their improvements, and then discovering that the most useful one was the boring defensive ability you initially ignored.
At least the monsters will appreciate your sense of adventure.
