There are few things in an MMORPG more irritating than spending real money on something and receiving absolutely nothing in return. Except, perhaps, discovering that the game has also decided you are no longer allowed to buy it again. That is a particularly creative approach to running a shop, and one that some AION 2 players encountered during the game's first full week after its Global launch.
NC has confirmed that the Steam payment issues affecting AION 2 Global between October 6 and October 12 have now been resolved. According to an official notice published on October 15, the necessary corrections were completed on October 14. Missing purchases have been delivered, and purchase limits incorrectly consumed by failed transactions have been restored.
For players who spent the past week wondering whether their money had vanished somewhere between Steam and Atreia, that is welcome news.
Two Different Steam Payment Problems
The problem actually involved two separate failures, each unpleasant in its own way. The first affected purchases where Steam successfully processed the payment, but the corresponding items never arrived in the player's account. In other words, the transaction worked perfectly well from the perspective of the payment system, while the game itself apparently forgot the rather important part involving the product.
The second problem was more unusual. Some purchases failed to complete, yet AION 2 still counted them against the item's purchase limit. Players could therefore find themselves unable to attempt another purchase even though the original transaction had never succeeded.
NC says both issues have now been addressed:
- Missing purchased items: Items from affected completed Steam transactions have been delivered.
- Incorrectly consumed purchase limits: Purchase allowances affected by unsuccessful transactions have been restored to their previous values.
The developer says all necessary corrective actions were completed on Wednesday, October 14, at 10:00, although the official notice does not specify a time zone for that particular timestamp.
Another Steam Problem After a Difficult Launch
This is not the first time Steam purchases have caused trouble for AION 2. During Advanced Access, NC had to address a separate issue where the game failed to recognise some players' paid access rights. We covered that in our earlier article about Steam Advanced Access problems and account linking, which also involved concerns about how Steam and PURPLE accounts communicate with the game.
It is worth making one distinction here: the latest announcement concerns payment fulfilment and purchase limits. It does not confirm that every previously reported account-linking issue has been resolved.
We also explained in our AION 2 Steam vs PURPLE comparison why choosing a launcher matters once purchases enter the picture. Both platforms provide access to the same Global game, but payment handling and certain purchase arrangements differ.
For players who simply want to kill monsters and collect increasingly elaborate shoulder armour, these distinctions probably seem unnecessarily complicated. Unfortunately, modern MMORPGs have become rather good at turning something as ordinary as buying an item into a small administrative adventure.
What Should Affected Players Do Now?
If you made a Steam purchase between October 6 and October 12 and did not receive the item, the first step is to check your account and the relevant in-game purchase or delivery information. NC states that the missing items have now been delivered to all affected purchases.
Players whose failed payments incorrectly exhausted a purchase allowance should also check whether that allowance has been restored.
If something is still missing, compare the transaction against your Steam purchase history and contact AION 2 Global Customer Support with the relevant purchase information. Keep your payment confirmation available, and avoid repeatedly purchasing the same item while investigating an unresolved transaction.
This is particularly worth checking for anyone managing Founder's Pack entitlements. NC has already made adjustments to Founder's Pack cosmetics and upgrade arrangements, so players should understand which purchase rules apply to their platform rather than assuming every problem involves the same underlying bug.
A Small Fix With an Important Consequence
It is easy to dismiss this as another technical notice among the many fixes accompanying AION 2's Global launch. Yet reliable purchases matter, particularly in a free-to-play MMORPG where Membership, premium currency and access to economic systems form a substantial part of the business model.
Players can tolerate a surprising number of inconveniences in an MMO. We accept queues, maintenance windows, complicated crafting systems and bosses that appear personally offended by our existence. But when money changes hands, expectations become rather less flexible.
NC has now confirmed that the affected Steam transactions have been corrected. That should bring some relief to players caught by the problem, although the developer has not published figures showing how many purchases were involved.
For anyone preparing to spend money on AION 2, our Before You Play guide remains a useful introduction to the Global version's launcher and purchase arrangements.
And for those who already paid for something last week, the important news is considerably simpler: your purchase should finally have caught up with your wallet.
Better late than never, although preferably before the next maintenance.
