There are many reasons why an MMORPG might refuse to let you enter a dungeon. Your equipment could be too weak, your party might be missing a healer, or perhaps you have simply not reached the required level.
But when AION 2 suddenly tells players they need to reach Level 99, something has clearly gone wrong.
Following the November 4, 2026 update, players encountered confusing Hard Mode options in the Expedition interface. Fire Temple and Ferocious Horn Den appeared to offer difficulties that were not supposed to be available, while upcoming Tier 3 Hard Mode content displayed an incorrect Level 99 entry requirement.
NC has now released a hotfix removing the unintended difficulty selections and clarified that Tier 3 Hard Mode is scheduled to open next week.
Apparently, the dungeon menu was a little too enthusiastic about the future.
AION 2 Hard Mode Bug: Fire Temple and Ferocious Horn Den Hotfix
In its official November 4 hotfix announcement on Steam, NC confirmed that Hard difficulty had been unintentionally displayed for two Expeditions:
- Fire Temple
- Ferocious Horn Den
The developer released a small update removing those incorrect options. To apply the fix, players must completely exit AION 2, download the update through Steam or PURPLE, and restart the game.
Importantly, this does not mean NC has permanently cancelled Hard Mode for either dungeon. The announcement concerns difficulty selections appearing before they were intended to be available.
Nor does the hotfix announcement identify additional balance changes, new rewards or adjustments to existing dungeon encounters.
The confusion is understandable. Hard Mode has been expanding steadily throughout AION 2's first month of Global release.
On October 21, Krao Cave and Draupnir received Hard Mode, introducing Item Level 2,600 requirements, limited revives and demanding boss encounters.
Then, on October 28, Urugugu Canyon and Vakron Sky Island joined the Hard Mode lineup, raising the entry requirement to Item Level 2,700.
For players following that progression, seeing additional Hard Mode options after another weekly update was hardly surprising.
The problem was that the interface appeared to be announcing content ahead of schedule.
What Does the Level 99 Bug Mean for Tier 3 Hard Mode?
NC addressed the unusual Level 99 requirement in a separate message on the official AION 2 Discord server.
The developer confirmed that the character-level requirement for Tier 3 Hard Mode dungeons had been incorrectly set to Level 99.
More importantly, NC clarified that these dungeons were not intended to be accessible yet. Their official opening is planned for the week following the November 4 announcement.
That means the Level 99 requirement should not be interpreted as a legitimate progression target or evidence of an upcoming increase to the character level cap.
It is also important to distinguish the confirmed hotfix from the broader issue. NC explicitly says it has removed the unintended Hard selections from Fire Temple and Ferocious Horn Den. The developer has not supplied a detailed technical explanation establishing whether the incorrect Level 99 requirement had the same underlying cause.
Likewise, the announcement does not provide a precise Tier 3 launch date or final entry requirements. Those details remain subject to further official confirmation.
For now, the practical advice is simple: install the hotfix and continue preparing through the content already available.
Our AION 2 Fast Gearing Guide explains how to improve equipment without wasting valuable upgrade materials on items that will soon be replaced.
The November 4 update also increased Exploration Dungeon rewards, providing additional materials for players working towards more demanding encounters.
One other distinction is worth making. Abyssal Forge: Ludra officially launched with Normal and Hard difficulties on November 4, requiring Item Levels 2,800 and 3,000 respectively. That Sanctuary encounter is separate from the delayed Tier 3 Expedition difficulties.
AION 2's expanding endgame still offers plenty of challenges, and the next Hard Mode tier is apparently not far away.
But at least players now know that reaching Level 99 is not the solution.
Sometimes you need better equipment, better tactics and better teamwork to defeat a dungeon. Other times, somebody at NC simply needs to fix the menu.
